First Communion
Baptized Catholics who have attained the age of reason (age 7) are welcome to grow in faith with our Sacramental Preparation group. Children are generally catechized on the eucharist as well as the sacrament of reconciliation within the same set of preparation sessions. Our first communion and first reconciliation preparation group generally starts in January, meets weekly and continues until Easter. The group reconvenes for one more session after all the children have celebrated their first communion to reflect on their experience and think about what God has planned for them next!
As the church recognizes the parent(s) as the primary catechist(s) for their children, we ask that at least one parent attend each sacramental preparation session with their child. You will find that this will serve not only as a faith experience for you but also as a special time for you and your child to bond as you grow in faith together.
In addition to our sacramental preparation sessions, the best way for you to help your child become familiar with the ebb and flow of Mass, and to feel prepared to celebrate their first communion, is to attend Mass regularly. They can celebrate with the whole church community or choose to join the Children’s Liturgy of the Word (Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.) for part of the Mass.
It is important to recognize that each sacramental preparation session is not a class, with material that must be learned. Instead, we can view each meeting as a faith experience and an opportunity to grow closer to God. That being said, if you cannot commit to attending all 10 sacramental preparation sessions, you are always welcome to register for next year.
